The Schnebly Windows and Hangover Trail in Sedona
The red rocks of Sedona are a photographer's dream, but hidden among the well-known vistas are some truly spectacular secrets. One such treasure is the Schnebly Windows, a series of natural arches tucked away along the challenging Hangover Trail. Many trails in Sedona can be overcrowded but this is a trail that has less traffic and some amazing views all along the hike!
The Hike At the Hangover Trail
The journey to the Schnebly Windows is an adventure in itself. The Hangover Trail, part of the larger Munds Wagon Trail system, offers a challenging but rewarding hike. As you ascend, you'll encounter diverse landscapes, from lush greenery to expansive vistas reminiscent of Zion National Park. Each turn of the trail presents new compositions, so keep your camera ready!
Key Trail Details:

Estimated Time: 2-4 hours round trip
the Hike and Finding The Schnebly Windows
The hike starts at the Munds Wagon Parking area off of Schnebly Hill Road. Hike the trail for about 1.5 miles until you reach a sign post (it will be the only one) and hook up to the left. Hike about another mile up and back the direction you started at. Once you reach the top and are between two large rock formations and have panoramic views of Sedona you will need to take a smaller trail off to the left. Be careful as the rock is loose and there is some scrambling off on this smaller trail.
After following the social trail branching off from the Hangover Trail, you'll reach the first of the Schnebly Windows, also known as Proboscis Arch. From here, carefully make your way around the south or left side of the butte to discover two more hidden arches. Each window offers a distinct view of Sedona's red rock country, framed perfectly by nature's own handiwork.
Essential Tips for Hiking and Photographing the Trail
Wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction for the steep, sometimes slippery terrain.
Bring plenty of water and snacks - there's no shade on much of the trail.
Start early or late in the day to catch the best light and avoid the midday heat.
Carry a wide-angle lens for capturing the expansive views inside the cave and outside.
Consider bringing a tripod for low-light shots in the caves.
Conclusion
The Schnebly Windows and Hangover Trail offer a perfect blend of adventure and photographic opportunity. While challenging, the reward of capturing these hidden Sedona caves and the surrounding vistas is well worth the effort. Remember to prepare well, hike safely, and most importantly, take time to put down the camera and simply absorb the breathtaking beauty of Sedona's red rock country!
