Full Guide To Factory Butte And Hanksville, Utah

What is Factory Butte?

Located in the remote desert of southern Utah, Factory Butte is a towering geological wonder that stands out from miles away. Factory Butte is a 6,302-foot sandstone feature that rises dramatically from the Utah badlands. Factory Butte is one of the best highlights of southern Utah and a part of my ultimate 3 day Utah road trip.

How to Get to Factory Butte

To get to Factory Butte, take Highway 24 east from Capitol Reef National Park or west from Hanksville. After about 11 miles, turn onto the unpaved Coal Mine Road which winds around the base of the butte. The dirt road to get around Factory Butte can be done without high clearance or 4x4 but if you want to get closer by taking smaller side roads you will need high clearance and 4x4. Although you can get amazing views from Coal Mine Road all around of Factory Butte.

What Else to Do in the Hanksville Area

While Factory Butte itself is stunning, the surrounding area offers endless adventuring. Just nearby off of Coal Mine Road is the Moon Overlook which is an epic overlook of the Utah badlands and like its name it resembles something from outer space. To get to the Moon Overlook take Skyline View Drive. Nearby is also Capitol Reef National Park, which offers some amazing views. A part of Capital Reef National Park is Cathedral Valley, a backroad that offers some unique desert landscapes to explore. Last but not least are the Bentonite Hills. These unique hills resemble something like mars with incredible colors. Be mindful if you do decide to visit the Bentonite Hills as there is a river crossing and a 4x4 vehicle is required.
