What and Where is Kanab, Utah?
Kanab, is a small town in southern Utah, just near the Arizona and Utah border. Kanab is a gateway to some of the most breathtaking and photogenic landscapes in the American Southwest. From iconic natural wonders to hidden gems, this region of Utah offers endless opportunities for landscape photographers and adventure enthusiasts to capture and witness awe-inspiring scenes.
The Wave
This world-famous sandstone formation in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is a photographer's dream. Its mesmerizing swirls and curves of vivid colors make for unforgettable compositions. Obtaining a permit is challenging, but the reward is worth the effort.
Coyote Buttes South
If you can't secure a permit for The Wave, Coyote Buttes South is an excellent alternative. You will still need to get a permit but your chances of winning are much higher, you can also get them guaranteed a few months in advance. Similar to The Wave, Coyote Buttes South has colorful and unique rock formations.
Antelope Canyon
Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are renowned for their stunning light beams and intricate sandstone patterns. Hiring a guided tour is essential to explore and photograph these mesmerizing slot canyons. If you want to avoid the crowds there are also many other slot canyons in the area to see.
Horseshoe Bend
This iconic bend in the Colorado River offers a breathtaking view, especially during sunrise or sunset. It's easily accessible from Page, Arizona, making it a must-visit destination for landscape photographers. The parking lot can get crowded so get there early!
Lake Powel
Lake Powel offers many unique opportunities for landscape photography. You can get some great views just from the Marina or the Glen Canyon Dam. If you are up for more of an adventure there is plenty to explore around Lake Powel for photography. A few of my favorites are Alstrom Point and Reflection Canyon.
Zion National Park
Utah's first national park boasts some of the most iconic landscapes in the Southwest, including the famous Canyon Overlook and the challenging hikes to Angel's Landing and The Narrows. Zion also has the famous Subway hike which can be done through obtaining a permit. Zion has everything to offer from easy trails to more difficult hikes but they all offer very amazing views.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Just up the road from Kanab is Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce Canyon is known for its unique orange hoodoos and is a photographer's paradise. Capture the vibrant colors and otherworldly formations at sunrise or under the Milky Way. If you have the chance to visit in the winter you can get some amazing conditions with the orange rocks and white snow.
Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon
This permit-free slot canyon near Kanab offers incredible photo opportunities without the hassle of hiring a guide. It can be a bit difficult to get to, requiring driving on sandy roads but there is an accessible dirt parking lot further away. Explore Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon’s stunning sandstone walls and light beams at your own pace.
Inchworm Arch
This photogenic arch just East of Kanab is a perfect spot for sunset photography. Don't miss the opportunity to capture its unique shape against the colorful sky.
White Pocket
White Pocket is like Mars on Earth. Prepare to be awe-struck by the otherworldly, swirling formations of Navajo sandstone at White Pocket. This remote location in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is a true photographer's paradise. The road to get here is sandy and a bit challenging but many guided tours are offered, although not needed. If you can make it out here it is well worth the journey!
