About Inchworm Arch

Inchworm Arch is located just East of Kanab, Utah. The Arch was discovered and named by Kanab Boy Scouts for its distinctive shape resembling an inchworm inching up the rocks. To get the best view of the arch looking like an inchworm, hike slightly down into the canyon from the parking area and position yourself on the eastern side of Inchworm Arch looking back west.

Directions to Inchworm Arch and The Drive

Inchworm Arch is located about 50 minutes east of Kanab, Utah in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. From Kanab, head east on Highway 89 for 9.5 miles and turn left onto Johnson Canyon Road just past milepost 55. Follow this paved road for 9.5 miles, passing remnants of an old western movie set that was used for classics like Gunsmoke.

At Nephi Pastures, turn right onto sandy Road 556. This is where you will want to switch to 4wd which is needed to reach the arch. Stay on 556 for 8 miles, taking the first left to stick with 556 when it splits. The road descends into a valley where you'll turn right onto Road 558. Drive 1 mile, then turn left at the "Arch" sign. Follow "Inchworm" signs for 1.5 miles until the road ends at a "No Vehicles" marker, which is the parking area.

Hiking to Inchworm Arch

The hike into Inchworm Arch is pretty easy. Overall the hike is only a couple hundred feet with a small amount of elevation gain, about 100 feet, on the way back out. From the parking area there should be a small dirt trail to hike down into the main canyon area. Once you are down the trail a little you will turn slightly to the left and head down some more into the canyon until you reach Inchworm Arch.
