The Vortex, Utah | Best Alternative to Zion National Park

What is “The Vortex” or “The Bowl”?

If you're looking for an alternative to the crowded trails of Zion National Park, the Vortex hike in Southern Utah is a hidden gem that offers amazing views of the surrounding landscape. This stunning sandstone formation, also known as "The Bowl," is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a glimpse into the geological wonders of the region. The best time to visit The Vortex is after recent rainfall when it fills up with water.

Getting To The Vortex

This hike is located near the town of Gunlock. The Vortex is easily accessible from St. George and only about an hour drive from Zion National Park.

To get to The Vortex:

  1. From St. George, take Old Highway 91 and travel approximately 33 miles.

  2. At mile post 17.4, just before the road crosses the Santa Clara River and enters Gunlock, turn right onto Lower Sand Cove Road.

  3. Follow Lower Sand Cove Road for about 3 miles until you cross a small stream.

  4. Just after the stream crossing, turn right onto a rough dirt road and park in the designated area.

Hiking to The Vortex

The hike to the Vortex is pretty easy but moderate. The hike is a total of approximately 1.3 miles each way with just over 500 ft of elevation gain. The trail winds through a landscape of lava rocks, sandy paths, and stunning red and white sandstone formations. As you start to ascend up the rocks keep an eye out for cairns (rock piles) and because the trail disappears and you will be hiking on the rocks. I used this All Trails map to help guide me.

The Vortex, Utah

Upon reaching the Vortex, you'll be awestruck by the deep, swirling sandstone pothole that has been carved by wind and water over centuries. The intricate patterns and vibrant orange colors of the sandstone create a mesmerizing sight and is a great location for landscape photography as well. The amazing views of the mountains around the area are also stunning to see.

Additional Attractions Near The Vortex

After your visit to the Vortex, consider exploring some of the other attractions in the area. Gunlock Falls, a seasonal waterfall, is located nearby and can be combined with your Vortex hike for a full day of adventure.

Alternatively, you can cool off at the Veyo Pool or indulge in a slice of pie at Veyo Pies, two beloved institutions in the nearby town of Veyo.
