Summer 2024 Hiking Essentials

  1. Hiking Boots

Hiking boots go without saying, it’s in the name. This being said it is important to have a good high quality pair of hiking boots. Hiking boots come in all shapes and sizes. My personal favorite are Oboz because they are a little heavier and have good ankle support. Oboz hiking boots are also waterproof and have great grip which helps when climbing around rocks.

  2. Water Bottle

A water bottle is also super important especially when hiking in the summer time. I love Hydro Flasks because they are durable and come in some larger sizes which can be helpful for longer hikes and hikes on rougher terrain.

  3. GPS

If you plan to spend time camping, hiking, and exploring the backcountry a GPS is super important to have. I have never had to use mine but it is nice to have knowing that if something was to ever happen I could get help. I use the Garmin inReach Mini because it is small and lightweight.

  4. Protection

Having some form of protection is important when hiking. I carry around a Spyderco knife to protect me from other people and when hiking in bear country I carry bear spray with me as well. I’ve never had to use either but it is good to have something just in case.

  5. Sunscreen

Summer months can be hot and it is important to be mindful of the summer sun. I use Sun Bum Sunscreen because it is reef safe and not as bad for the environment as a lot of other brand name sunscreens are.

  6. Headlamp

If you just plan to hike during the day you likely won’t need a headlamp. If you plan to be hiking in the evening though it is important to have one with you just in case. I will often hike out for sunset and need a headlamp getting back in the dark. I use Black Diamond because of their reliability.
