Why You Should Photograph A Location More Than Once

As landscape photographers, we often find ourselves at a crossroads: should we return to a familiar location or venture into uncharted territory? Going somewhere always seems new and exciting and like the obvious choice. However, this decision can significantly impact our photography and creative growth. That isn’t to say don’t explore new places, but don’t forget about the places you have already been as there are many reasons why to visit a location more than once to photograph.

Revisiting a location allows you to deepen your understanding of its nuances. With each visit, you become more attuned to the subtle changes in light, weather, and seasonal variations. This familiarity can lead to more refined and thoughtful compositions. Sometimes I get the perfect composition when out taking photographs but other times I find myself leaving unhappy with what I captured. You can also capture amazing conditions when you visit a location different times of the year or even the day. Somewhere I have been a lot is Sedona, Arizona which is beautiful with its red rocks and green surroundings. This is one place that I love to photograph during sunset, for astrophotography, and especially in the snow! Trying new places can still offer different images, this is how I have gotten a few photos that I never imagined possible such as yellow flowers in the desert.
